The Crippling Effect Of Belief

Aren’t we conditioned to believe that belief is important? That we must believe to make things come true? We must have faith and believe that all will work out?

This may feel like blasphemy, however, with a deeper awakening to your True Nature, there will be a letting go of believing and an opening of surrendering and accepting.

I recall Joseph Campbell in an interview with Bill Moyer said when one knows through experience then belief and faith are no longer needed. I find this to be true. Belief is due to not knowing, while experience is the proof. Once you have experienced something you lose your belief in it.

Just think about this, if someone says the hot tub water is cold, you can only believe what you are being told. This is because even though you have always experienced the water being hot, now you are told it is cold. This takes belief, even though you have not experienced the coldness. It goes against everything you know to be true, and so it must be believed. However, once you put your hand in the water and experience the cold water you no longer believe, you know.

When it comes to this life experience, so much of what we believe is false. We create and accept beliefs based on our conditioning of who we believe ourselves to be. There it is again. The beliefs we are creating are only based on another belief.

This is where all the trouble begins. I ask you now; what if the belief of whom you are is not true? What if everything you believe about yourself is not who you are?

Well in fact this is exactly true. Everything you believe about yourself is only one untruth after another. It is your self-image or ego. This is why we say it is your false sense of self.

If you sat down and wrote out all your beliefs about you and the world it would fill a book. The next step would then be to ask well if this is what is being believed, then who or what is believing in them to create this identity?

What a beautiful and liberating question. It is the only true question worth asking, fore in its answer lies not only the realization of your True Nature, but the answer to all questions.

Why are beliefs crippling? Because most all are based on a delusional sense of self. These beliefs only support the illusion of an identity apart from you as the True Nature.

Even greater than just separation most beliefs are coming from a belief of lack, unworthiness, self-judgment, and arrogance.

Now certainly there can be beliefs that just deal with the practical aspects of life, and these are of little consequence. For instance, we moments ago spoke of the water in the hot tube being cold. Believing this even if not testing the water temperature is not going to create any separating from your True Nature unless you take it personally.

If you pay attention you will realize the difference between practical beliefs and personal beliefs. Personal beliefs will bolster up your sense of identity. There will be a sense of importance to who you are with personal beliefs. You will also realize that when something goes against these beliefs you will feel the need to justify and defend. You will also experience a sense of completeness when others agree with your beliefs. Either way good or bad these personal beliefs separate you from the True Nature of you.

Giving meaning to thoughts and events and holding onto them as part of a false identity is what causes all the pain and suffering.

Holding onto a false sense of your true Self is the cause of pain and suffering. It is not needed and does not give this life experience any true joy and peace.

All that is needed is the realization that you do not require a made-up, (false), identity to exist.
