The Leaves Are Changing, The Tree Does Not Weep

Change is constant.

You are not the changing experience you are what witness’s the change without attachment or meaning.

Autumn is upon us and everywhere there are signs of the changing season. Here in Southern Oregon, it happened overnight. One day I was speaking to a client, as we looked out over the trees which were still green and the next day several trees right in front of the studio turned yellow and red. It was as if they needed to be reminded of the season change and their part to play.

Trees just as grass and all things whether living or inanimate like sand are all just physical expressions of the True Nature, just as you and I are. Yes, there are a variety of expressions and yes we are graced with the ability to transcend our ignorance believing we are only the body. However, do not believe you are other than the same true nature of the trees, grass, and sand because you are the same. There is only one True Nature expressing itself as variety.

If you feel that I have insulted you then that is just a reaction from the self-image defending its singular existence apart from everything else. If there is the thought “ well if I am no better than sand or grass then how would I be without who I think I am”, this is also just the self-image in a state of fear of not existing as it knows itself to be.

Both of these occurrences come into your experience through thought. The first thought is I am (insert your name here). That first thought then binds together like glue all the other thoughts having to do with the life experience up to this point.

Think about this. What do you know about yourself? Not the body, but only whom you think you are? All that you will come up with are thoughts about what you have experienced and beliefs you have created and accepted about the experience. That’s it, nothing more. Here is the challenging part for the ego. It is realizing it is nothing more than a thought. It does not want to realize it doesn’t really exist as anything more than a thought. It already knows that thoughts come and go, and then they don’t truly have a physical form. Yet the ego or self–image is always trying to identify its existence as the body.

With this understanding, the ego can no longer justify its existence as reality, and can sometimes panic just like a person drowning.

Trees and grass and even animals don’t need to prove the existence of a false sense of identity.

Let’s see how much I can remember from my forestry degree. When a tree turns color in autumn it is due to a physiological change in its expression. Simply stated, the tree recognizes the change in climate, sun exposure, and gravitational pull, which triggers storage of sugars into the roots, and stimulation of cells called the Abscission layer, which creates a scab of sorts at the base of the leaf stem. The leaf slows its photosynthesis, which suspends chlorophyll production, which supported the greening of the leaf. Without chlorophyll, the leaf turns colors of yellow, orange, purple, and red, etc. Once the girdling of the leaf stem is complete the leaf falls off.

Do you think the tree goes into a depression because it has a self-image, which is now threatened because it has no leaves? It sounds silly, doesn’t it? It is still a tree as complete as before, with or without leaves. In fact, the True Nature of the tree is unaffected by all conditions. It could lose a limb, or even be hit by lightning and lose half of its top, and it would continue to express its Treeness without concern of the expression. It certainly doesn’t compare itself to the other trees around it nor does it create a belief of lack due it outward appearance. And so we can say, The Leaves Are Changing, The Tree Does Not Weep.

In truth, the True Nature, (of the tree, which is the same True Nature of you and I), the only witness’s all conditions from thoughts all the way to physical expressions of daily life experiences.

You and I are this True Nature. It is what is giving life to these bodies and minds. In fact, the body and mind cannot exist without True Nature’s awareness.

At its core, the biggest difference between humans and all other life is that we have developed a false identity, and express ourselves as this identity instead of our True Nature.

Your primary purpose as this True Nature is to awaken or realize what you are. This can be done by realizing and negating what you are not. You are not this image you are holding as your existence. You are not the expressions of thought and feeling and experiences. You are Life itself, Existence before it manifests, the Awareness before it is aware of being any “Thing”.

Holding onto a false sense of your true Self is the cause of pain and suffering. It is not needed and does not give this life experience any true joy and peace.

All that is needed is the realization that you do not require a made-up, (false), identity to exist.
