Only Witnessing the Reflection On A Pond

Imagine you are standing in the forest, and come across a pond. The pond surface is completely still, and surrounded by trees up to its banks. You observe everything without involvement. The trees are just trees, the pond just a pond. It is seen as it truly is without attachment of personalized meaning.

You then walk out on a small dock that reaches into the pond. Looking over the edge into the water of a still pond you see the reflection of your image, the trees, sky, and clouds passing. If there is a deeper observing you can see into the water and see fish and plants.

This second observing is not the truth but instead a reflection of the truth. Can you grasp this? What is seen on the surface of the pond is only a reflection of the trees and sky and clouds and your image.

Touch the pond and ripples will spread across the surface causing distortions in the reflection. What is then observed is even more of a distortion of the truth.

The rippling effects are conditions of the ego associating what is being observed to make a personal connection with it. In truth what is being observed only is what it is, however, when egoic personalization is put upon the observation of what is there is distortion. It is just this egoic distortion of what just is that is the cause of our pain and suffering.

Let’s go back to before you looked into the ponds and saw the reflection. See if you can be aware that at this point there was just an awareness of the surrounding of the forest and the pond. No labeling, no judgments, not even a sense of you the person. Just an awareness moving through the forest. This is correct observing or unconditioned observing. You can observe the trees as their tree-ness, and the pond for its pond-ness.

When looking into the water we have a habit of creating a connection or personalization with the image that is observed. Yet at the same time there can also be a disconnect with the image. By this I mean there is an awareness that the image is not true. It is not personalized. It only depends on the egoic state.

The pointing here is to realize that what most of us are always doing is personalizing what is being observed, instead of only being aware of what is. That seems a bit tricky even as I am writing this.

The only thing that is happening is a conditioned set of beliefs is always looking at every moment of what is right now being observed whether just thoughts or external situations. This conditioned set of beliefs is the ego / personality. It is not what you are, but instead a conditioned or learned and accepted set of beliefs. However, these beliefs give the reflection of a self-image just like the one on the surface of the pond.

To cut to the chase, everything you think you are as a person and body is only a delusional reflection of conditioned beliefs. That may be somewhat scary for some, and confusing for others, yet even for those, realize that what is scared or confused is still only the delusional reflection, or the ego.

There is the True Nature (what you actually are), that is always only aware of all this and completely unaffected by it.

This should mean that no matter what your health issues are, not matter how challenging they are to the ego, you as the True Nature are unaffected by them. They are ripples on the pond.

When this is realized, then you can take practical steps to heal the body. Most of the time we get so caught up in how terrible something is (this is personalizing), that we inadvertently give energy to it and the condition continues on. Going back to the pond, instead of just observing the reflection, we continue to cause more ripples.

You are meant to be free from all this, and your freedom awaits you.

Holding onto a false sense of your true Self, is the cause of pain and suffering. It is not needed and does not give this life experience any true joy and peace.

All that is needed is the realization that you do not require a made up, (false), identity to exist.
